Well, these babies start their lives around the end of July and as seeds, they need light to germinate, require cooler weather (they bolt when it gets hot in the summer), and usually, nursery growers use chemicals like growth regulators and retardants to shorten the stem length between leaves. The one great thing to know is that they can be planted quite deeply, and if you don’t mind a little repotting, you can avoid using chemicals all together (well, unless you have a problem with cabbage loopers, then that is a whole different issue!!).
